Across the street, several young men were crowded around a car. They all wore short-sleeve button-up shirts that were tucked into high-waisted khaki pants and looked ridiculously over-dressed for what they were doing, which was trying to get an old Model T Ford started by pushing it. As we passed, the boys stopped to look at me, and I tore my eyes away as a sudden feeling of embarrassment washed over me.

“What are they doing with that old car?” I asked.

Chief Eggers frowned. “If you ask me, any fool boy who thinks he can go joy-riding about while his brothers are off getting killed is a damn fool and a disgrace.” He glances over at me. “Pardon my language, ma’am, but it’s a matter that I get right upset about.”
